Kamakahonu Beach is also known as King Kam Beach, the center of Kailua Kona. The name of Kamakahonu comes from the Hawaiian language from the name “Ka Maka Honu” which translates to “the turtle eye”. The local lore says the name was chosen because the rock was shaped like a turtle which is now been submerged under Kailua Pier and Ahu’ena Heiau.

The history of the island is interesting with King Kamehameha the Great living there from 1812 to 1819. The King spent the last seven years of his life in the Ahu’ena Heiau Temple, known as the temple of the burning altar until his son Liholiho succeeded him. The temple was reconstructed in the 1970s and can now be viewed from the outside with artifacts are on display in the hotel nearby.
